Radar Enclosures from Alaska Defense

When it comes to protecting high-tech and expensive radar equipment, nothing beats the durability and reliability of SkyDome™ radar enclosures from Alaska Defense. The retractable design means radar equipment can be hidden from view or opened and used without any interference. The SkyDome enclosure can also be used for storing artillery equipment and as a UAS enclosure. A remote-control box with integrated safety switches allows the SkyDome shelter to open fully or close in 2.5 minutes.

Each SkyDome radar enclosure includes a zipper entry door for easy access when closed.

Alaska Defense provides the following SkyDome models:

Radomes vs. Radar Shelters

What are radomes? Radomes, or radar domes, are specialized enclosures that protect radar systems from environmental factors while minimally affecting their electromagnetic signal transmission. There are several types of radomes, each suited to different operational needs:

  • Composite Radomes: Often referred to as sandwich radomes, composite radomes are made from self-supporting curved panels that combine to form a spherical dome. They are typically used for protection in fixed locations.
  • Air-supported Radomes: Utilizing an inflatable structure, these radomes require continuous operation of blowers and have redundant systems to maintain inflation. Air-supported radomes are known for good RF characteristics but necessitate expensive, energy-intensive heating systems during snowstorms to prevent collapse.
  • Space Frame Radomes: These rigid and self-supporting radomes are composed of triangular panels that assemble into a geodesic dome. Common in severe weather locations, space frame radomes are generally reserved for semi-permanent to permanent radar needs due to their complex assembly requirements.

Unlike traditional radomes, radar shelters employ a robust framework with a tensioned fabric membrane, ensuring weatherproof protection for sensitive radar equipment. The SkyDomeradar enclosure from Alaska Defenseexemplifies advanced radar shelter technology with several key advantages:

  • Expeditionary Radar Enclosures: Designed for rapid assembly, SkyDome enclosures support frontline missions with unparalleled agility. They can be deployed and quickly relocated as mission objectives evolve, making them ideal for dynamic operational environments.
  • Engineered Radar Enclosures: Built to withstand extreme conditions, our radar shelters are engineered for resilience against high winds, heavy snow loads, and extreme temperatures, ensuring continued operation and reliability in harsh environments.
  • Retractable Radar Enclosures: Our retractable enclosures can open or close within minutes, enabling immediate operational readiness. This feature enables radar systems to function without signal attenuation and to be quickly concealed when necessary.

At Alaska Defense, our American-made radar shelters provide a durable, versatile solution for safeguarding radar antennas, instruments, and associated equipment. Whether protecting radar systems, artillery, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), our enclosures offer superior protection, adaptability, and tactical advantages over conventional radomes.
