Over 3,000 Alaska Medical Shelter Systems Deployed

The Alaska Medical Shelter System from Alaska Defense® (Alaska), is the most popular commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) medical shelter used by the U.S. Air Force for EMEDS Basic, EMEDS +10 Bed and EMEDS +25 Bed Air Force Theater Hospital (AFTH) systems. Since 1999, over 3,000 Alaska Medical Shelter Systems have been deployed to support USAF military operations by providing an unmatched level of bed-down and theater-level medical service capability for deployed forces. Most recently, military operations have relied on Alaska Medical Shelter Systems to serve as negative pressure isolation shelters for COVID-19.

Medical Shelters Refined From Experience

The Alaska Medical Shelter System is the most tested COTS medical shelter in Department of Defense (DoD) inventory – meeting or exceeding all environmental tests at Aberdeen Test Center and the McKinley Climatic Laboratory. Compared to other soft wall and hard wall shelters, the Alaska Medical Shelter System was declared the safest and most survivable medical shelter when exposed to overpressure testing performed by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Joint SPICE testing.

Medical Shelters Engineered For Any Environment

The modular and scalable design of the Alaska Medical Shelter System allows any customer to deploy medical capabilities supporting a full range of military operations, including combat, contingency, humanitarian assistance (such as through negative pressure isolation facilities for COVID-19), disaster relief, defense support of civil authorities, and stability operations.

Engineered to withstand sustained winds of 80 MPH (with 100 MPH gusts) and a snow load of 20 lbs. per square ft. (PSF), the Alaska Medical Shelter System is able to provide the following force health protection and forward stabilization capabilities in extreme and harsh environments around the world:

  • Trauma surgical resuscitation and stabilization
  • Emergency care
  • Triage
  • Preventative medicine
  • Negative pressure isolation facilities for COVID-19
  • Decontamination
  • Primary care / non-emergency medical care
  • Dental services
  • Mental health
  • Morgue
  • ER / OR / ICU
  • Patient movement and evacuation
  • Medical Command and Control (C2)

The Alaska Medical Shelter System is available in two standard sizes:

  • 20’ wide x 32.5’ long x 10’ high
  • 20’ wide x 40.5’ long x 10’ high

A Professional Facility for Field Operations

A trained crew of four can setup the Alaska Medical Shelter Systems in less than 30 minutes, allowing small medical teams a safe and protected space to provide highly skilled medical care. Field hospital configurations allow for medical systems with a large number of inpatient beds capable of providing specialized care to be deployed to locations where no fixed medical facility exists. The Alaska Medical Shelter System was extensively used in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).

Relocation & Redeployment

A single Alaska Medical Shelter can be disassembled and stored in an Alaska Container. Forklift handling provisions allow the Alaska Container to be easily maneuvered in preparation for relocation. Four complete Alaska Medical Shelters can be loaded onto a 463L pallet (a total of 4 Alaska Containers – stacked 2 high and 2 wide) for transportation by fixed wing aircraft, ship, truck or train.

Added Shelter System Advantages

When combined with the 5-ton Alaska ECU® (environmental control unit), the Alaska Medical Shelter System can maintain a comfortable interior temperature of 72˚F in ambient temperatures of +125˚F, and maintain +65˚F in ambient temperatures of -10˚F with only 12 kW of heat. Alaska Defense produces a number of energy-saving products to reduce energy consumption, including: LED lighting, proprietary EnerLayer® insulation systems, as well as the Alaska Solar Fly®.

The Alaska Medical Shelter is 100% made in the U.S.A. and is Berry Amendment Compliant.
